When your wife is stuck at home while you jet around the world, it doesn't do to leave her without a set of wheels.
So when Samantha Cameron declared that she needed a new car, David Cameron did what millions of ordinary folk do – and headed for his local second-hand dealership.
The Prime Minister stunned staff at Witney Used Car Centre in Minster Lovell, Oxfordshire, when he pitched up to check out a vehicle he'd spotted.
Owner Iain Harris was even more surprised when, instead of opting for one of the more expensive cars on the forecourt, Mr Cameron selected a 2004 blue Nissan Micra costing less than £1,500 that has clocked up almost 93,000 miles.
'It was totally surreal,' Mr Harris said. 'I got a call on Friday night to say that the Prime Minister was on his way round to look at one of our cars. I thought it was one of my mates, winding me up.
'I couldn't believe it when he turned up. He spent about half an hour looking the car over. He said it had to be something made in the UK. I joked that he wouldn't want a red car.'
The Prime Minister indicated that he was looking for a 'run about' for his wife in the constituency. According to Mr Harris, the Prime Minister didn't look at any other cars.
Having satisfied himself that the petrol-fuelled Micra was what he was looking for, he returned on Saturday morning to pick it up, paying the full amount by card before driving off with his security detail following in his wake.
'He said he'd sorted out his insurance, and he drove off, just like that. He was very friendly and down to earth, just like any other bloke buying a car for the wife,' Mr Harris said.
Prime ministers do not usually drive themselves. Mr Cameron is more used to being driven around in a £200,000 Jaguar XJ modified to protect against potential terror attacks.
